Monday 10/10/2011 - General Superior’s Report

Report of the General Superior
Today M. Mechtild Meckl CJ presented her report. She began by referring to the decisions of the General Congregation of 2002 and described the ways these were implemented during the past nine years. Meanwhile our new name has become familiar - also with the general public.  Universal Mission has more and more become the essential element of our Constitutions. Universal Mission is expressed in the fourth vow. It is the vow for mission and during the formation period great importance is given to obedience for being sent.
We notice a certain shift in our services: direct involvement in the proclamation of the faith is gaining importance. It has, of course, always been the centre of our apostolic commitment, but the concrete forms have changed. Education is still a strong and important field of service. Social services have also been intensified and Integrity of Creation has become an indispensable aspect of our Christian life.
Some specific areas of pastoral engagement were then focussed on. Among them was the work in the field of media. The first sisters have been trained in this area and are supported to use the media effectively for the proclamation of the Good News
During M. Mechtild’s term of office different structural changes have happened in various provinces. The eight German speaking provinces have merged and formed the Middle European Province, and there have been new foundations of provinces and regions in India and neighbouring countries: Nepal, Delhi and Bangalore were established as new administrative units. The expansion of the Congregatio Jesu has proceeded further: from Korea to the North East, that is to Mongolia, from the Slovakian-Czech Province to Ukraine and Russia. The Spanish speaking provinces dared to establish a foundation in Cuba and here a second community is to be formed. Different regional conferences have been established to foster collaboration beyond provincial boundaries.
After this report lively and fruitful discussions took place in language groups and in the plenary.
