Between the 2nd -  6th of December 2019 Pauline Macharia, IBVM and Adina Balan, CJ made the first step for the new CJ-IBVM joint mission on JPIC, by attending a JPIC Promoters’ Formation Workshop in Rome. It was organized by the JPIC Commission which promotes and supports the integration of JUSTICE, PEACE & INTEGRITY OF CREATION in the life and mission of the Union of Superiors General (USG) and the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) and their member congregations.
The central theme of the training program was: New Wine and a Call to Holiness. The topics covered included: congregational and JPIC structures; the spirituality of JPIC/religious Vows; the role of a JPIC promoter; formation & JPIC; JPIC Commission and working groups; Networking.
‘A new thrust towards holiness ... is unthinkable without an impulse of renewed passion for the Gospel at the service of the Kingdom’, underpinned the message of the speakers and we were encouraged to see, feel and experience some new wine in new wineskins!
We look forward to the next steps of this mission and we proceed in the spirit of unity and common good for our Mary Ward family.  (text and photos: Pauline and Adina)

Inaugural ritual for the crib and the Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square

On  5 December 2019 the lights of the crib and the Christmas tree were switched on. It was a specially  moving moment for all who came to take part in the ritual.
This year's Christmas tree comes from the centuries-old forests in northern Italy devastated by storms in November 2018. The 26 metre tall  spruce hails from Rotzo in the province of Vicenza, part of a densely-wooded region which saw whole forests razed to the ground by winds of up to 200 km/h last year.
The nativity scene, which has been set up beside the Christmas tree is made almost entirely of wood from Scurelle, in the province of Trento.
The crib will reportedly be characteristic of the Trentino tradition, with more than 20 life-sized figures as well as some original tree trunks from forests hit by the storms.
As  the Mayors  of both places and other speakers thanked all the volunteers who set up the tree and the crib it got darker and darker. At the very end of the ceremony the lights of the Christmas tree were switched on.  It was a magic moment when thousands of little lights were glittering in the dark.  (text and phostos/eka)

IBVM Tertians on pilgrimage in Rome from 18 to 23 November 2019

In 1621, Mary Ward came to Rome to ask for the approval of the Pope for her new foundation. 398 years later 8 IBVM sisters came to Rome to make a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Mary Ward. They visited many churches in which Mary Ward prayed. They went to the Vatican and on their last free day they also visited the usual places in Rome, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and others. The time here in Rome is part of the nine month tertianship of the IBVM sisters, a time of spiritual renewal after 10 to 15 years in final vows.  The aim is to deepen their relationship with God and with one another, to work on the basic texts of the Congregation and to have some challenging new experiences.
They enjoyed both exploring the city and staying with us, the CJ sisters. After a day out on foot, they really enjoyed coming back home again. Now they will have some time together in Ireland. In 2020, they will also visit Mary Ward places in England and in Germany. (text and photos/eka)
